New Year Journal: East Lothian Chairman

The first Farmers Club Journal of 2020 introduces new Club Chairman, Allan Stevenson, and reports on Lady Rosie Boycott’s address to the House of Lords Luncheon and Lady Byford’s address to the Under 30s, as well as looking at farming’s productivity challenges, the new Agriculture Bill, Club golf and one of Chef’s food suppliers

Well known East Lothian potato producer Allan Stevenson is Club Chairman for 2020 – this Journal introduces him in own words, as well as detailing his farming and business background, and aspirations for the Club year ahead, including a Chairman’s Visit to Edinburgh & East Lothian (15-17 Jun) and The Farmers Club pre-Highland Show Dinner (17 Jun).

The New Year issue of the Farmers Club Journal – now arriving with members – also reports on the Club’s wonderful New Year’s Eve Black Tie Event – perfectly placed for the stunning London Fireworks display, and the Under 30s fabulous InterClub event promoting British food.

Further articles explore the political issues surrounding food and farming, as relayed by Lady Rosie Boycott at the annual Farmers Club House of Lords luncheon, and an insightful report examining the likely direction of future farm policy as heard at the Oxford Farming Conference. Sadly, we also include a detailed obituary for past Chairman John Nicholson.

Farming’s productivity challenge comes under detailed scrutiny, following a key initiative by the CARAS/FRAgS and the Worshipful Company of Farmers. Our Farming Figures analysis lists some rural pledges made in the Conservative Party’s winning election manifesto – watch for their fulfilment over the coming years.

Amongst further news we record one Club member’s success in the RICS awards, the Club Golf Society’s latest matches and 2020 schedule, and an impressive cycling fund-raiser achieved without even leaving the office!

Chef’s article profiles a successful Sussex smokery. Don’t forget to buy your copy of the sumptuous “Food at the Farmers Club” book – now available from Reception priced £29.00.
