Dear Members

I hope that you are enjoying this remarkably unseasonal mild and extended Autumn?  I am sure that as we hurtle towards Christmas, now only a little over a month away, a cold snap is sure to follow.  It’s now an exceptionally busy period in the Club and Christmas decorations are now only a few weeks away!  The Team here continues to consolidate, and I am sure you see many familiar faces when you visit who provide that very professional intuitive service which make us all feel so well cared for.  Thank you for your kindness towards them and they always appreciate your support.

Life outside the Club continues to challenge us and with the geopolitical unrest in the world currently with the unstable economic conditions, the ever-increasing costs of maintaining such a unique listed building can be bracing.  An interesting fact you may (or may not) wish to know: “What does it cost to turn the key and open the door here at the Club?”  And that is before you turn the lights on (eg utilities).  The answer, in excess of £36K each month in business rates and building service charge alone.  Going forward any relief we receive will only be reduced.  That said, now that you have taken a deep breath, we are in good shape.  We have set ourselves up to weather such storms and are ready for the unexpected.  We will continue to invest in the Club to not only maintain the fabric of this wonderful Club but also in the service provision for us and for the future generations.

It is now the time of the year when annual subscriptions will soon become due for renewal.  We hope that you will continue to enjoy the very special benefits and social aspects that your membership of The Farmers Club brings.  At this time, it is worth reflecting that your annual subscription is not just your contribution, as a member, towards the Club’s operating costs during the year, but also a personal investment for the future, providing an enhanced quality of life and facilitating lasting friendships amongst the farming and agricultural community over many years.

It has not been an easy time for anyone, and we do appreciate your loyalty to this wonderful Club.  We remain committed to providing excellent value, an outstanding quality of food, a first class Journal and a range of fascinating Club events with an extensive ‘Club to Country’ programme of agricultural show and farm/estate events; amongst so much more.  The increase has been kept to the absolute minimum necessary to ensure we can continue to meet our obligations, and for most, under £1.50 (2 pints of milk) a month.

Your help in ensuring prompt settlement of your subscription(s) by 31st January would be very much appreciated as this goes a long way towards maintaining our ‘Home from Home’ in the heart of London.

Finally, subscription fees provide a principal line of income to your Club and a vital contribution to its financial health.  We would welcome more members, and it follows that the extra income they bring would further underpin the Club’s financial position and allow the Club to deliver even great value for money to its Members.  If you know of any family, friends or colleagues from across the farming and agricultural community who would enjoy membership, please do encourage them to join by contacting Jez Scholfield, Membership Secretary:  HdM&C@thefarmersclub.com

The Club Committee, as well as the Club Team, join me in thanking you most sincerely for your loyalty and continued support to your Club.

With best wishes to you all,
Didi Wheeler
Chief Executive & Club Secretary
