August

Dear Member

The Summer Holidays are finally here, the weather is set to improve, the August Bank Holiday is on the horizon and London has some of its old buzz back. Thankfully memories of home schooling are behind us but you may be counting the day until the little ones go back to school or looking for a London escape to keep them occupied, if so I hope some of these suggestions will score 10/10.

Photography

Harry Potter Photographic Exhibition in Covent Garden
Located in Covent Garden, this brand-new attraction will showcase hundreds of exclusive images never seen before. I took my young brother there last week and it was really good.
It takes fans behind the camera during key moments in the film series and the exhibition is also home to London’s only bottled Butterbeer bar. So, why not make the ultimate school trip to Hogwarts and get your photo taken on a broom!

History

The London Mithraeum in the City of London
This Roman mithraeum was discovered in Walbrook Street in the City of London, during a building construction after the blitz.
The temple has been restored to capture the mystery and intrigue of the Roman cult of Mithras, who used to meet on this site. Haze, light and the sound of footsteps, chanting and secret whispers will transport you back to London AD 240.
Discover over 600 objects left or lost by the first Londoners, including the earliest recorded written document from Britain.

Luckily the best way to learn about great music is to listen to some and there is always something worth hearing at St Martins, with the added attraction of some great spaces to listen to it in!

Dr Johnson's House on Fleet Street
Dr Johnson's House is a charming 300 year old townhouse, nestled amongst the maze of law courts and alleys in the historic City of London.  Samuel Johnson, the writer, lived and worked here and it was in this building that he compiled his now famous dictionary of the English language.
A nice step back in time.

Science

Grant Museum of Zoology in Fitzrovia
Established in 1827 as part of University College London, this museum is a space for exploring the animal kingdom and making ground-breaking new discoveries. It is a truly fascinating collection and has a wide range of specimens ranging from skeletons (including those of extinct animals), skulls, stuffed animals and preserved animals.

Detention

Now, for those that have not behaved well so far during the Summer Holiday, maybe broken the household rules, had a lingering sense of rebellion, have spent some time in detention on the naughty stool this one may well appeal;

BEANO: The Art of Breaking the Rules - Somerset House on the Strand
From 21st October until 6th March 2022
Come face-to-face with the Beano gang - including Dennis and Gnasher, Minnie the Minx, Banana man and the Bash Street Kids – through original comic artwork and amazing artefacts, plundered from the Beano’s archive. Calling all mayhem-makers and rule-breakers, Beano is taking over Somerset House.

Why not get in touch and I’ll put together a timetable for your visit.
