October

Dear Member

The leaves are starting to fall, it’s beginning to get darker earlier and it’s just a few days until the clocks go back. Autumn has most definitely arrived.

Of course this weekend is also All Hallows' Eve so I thought I would focus on a few of London’s spookiest venues, as well as a few more ideas for the coming weeks, for those who like me are a little squeamish.

Spooky Places to Visit

Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret
An amazing slice of medical history, housed in the attic of the early eighteenth-century church of the old St Thomas’ Hospital, this atmospheric museum offers a unique insight into the history of medicine and surgery.

Hoxton Street Monster Supplies
Established in 1818 this fun, stylish outfit selling monster and zombie-themed food, sweets and knick-knacks for big kids.

Theatre

Starting with the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse this cosy enchanting theatre is magically lit by candles and recreates the atmosphere of a play going in the early seventeenth century.

Measure for Measure, Sam Wanamaker Playhouse
19th November – 15th January
A powerful and darkly comic new production of Measure for Measure, Shakespeare’s tale of injustice and inequality, comes to light in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

Hamlet, Sam Wanamaker Playhouse
21st January – 9th April
Performed for the first time in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Associate Artistic Director Sean Holmes and the Globe Ensemble, shed candlelight on the intensity of Hamlet as they bring this tale of corruption and disruption to life.

The Woman in Black at The London Fortune Theatre, Covent Garden
One of the most terrifying pieces of theatre you are ever likely to see.

Remember, remember the fifth of November…

Of course, not forgetting, Bonfire Night.
Watch the city’s skyline light up firework displays and don’t forget to bring a pocketful of OOOHHHs and AAAHHHs. Details of some organised, ticketed firework nights around town follow;

Wimbledon Park Musical Fireworks
Friday 5th November
Watch one of two (or both if you feel like it) pyrotechnic displays that have been put to music. The earlier show, which is more suitable for families features a Disney theme, while the second display will celebrate James Bond. There will also be rides and food stalls.

Alexandra Palace Fireworks Festival
Saturday 6th November
Set against unrivalled panoramic views over London this is the city’s biggest Fireworks Festival

Battersea Park Fireworks
Saturday 6th November -: London’s most-loved firework show and bonfire night.
Sunday 7th November -: A family-friendly fireworks show with an earlier start time and child-friendly programming.
The newly extended Northern line will now take you all the way to this event.
